The lack of gene flow is caused by isolating mechanisms, a term invented by Dobzhansky, but again popularized by Mayr. According to this, a species is a group of organisms that can interbreed with each other and produce fertile offsprings. Prior to this concept, species were first defined in terms of some phenotypic characters. These are the characters that are easily observed or measured.
